Irma Cheatham Summer Research Fellowship
This fellowship provides research support for a student sophomore or junior majoring or minoring in Africana Studies; or sophomores who intend to declare with Director's permission, to engage in the Africana Studies curriculum during the summer months. This fellowship is made possible by a generous gift from Seth Glickman '10, in honor of Irma Cheatham, a family friend who cared deeply about the Black experience in America. The fellowship provides $560/week for 8 to 10 weeks of full time research; subsidized college housing; and funding to cover research supplies.

Riley Research Awards
The Riley Research Awards support student independent research projects or student participation in field schools or enrichment activities that directly support their major or minor in Anthropology or Sociology. Awards include a stipend of $560 per week for 4-8 weeks in the summer (June-August). The Riley Research award was established by a gift from Matilda and John Riley to promote students’ engagement in independent research in anthropology.

Anthropology Enrichment Grants
These grants support student independent research and participation in a variety of curricular and cocurricular activities. Anthropology or Sociology majors and minors, and students currently enrolled in Anthropology or Sociology courses, may apply for grants of up to $500. Funding may be used during the academic year or during the summer to cover expenses such as travel, accommodations, attendance at conferences, research expenses, and participation in educational programs.

Bowdoin College Fellowships in the Life Sciences
Funds donated to the College will support 8, 9 or 10 week fellowships for students wishing to conduct independent research in the life sciences during the summer. In addition to students working with faculty in the biological sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience), students working on biological problem in the physical sciences and mathematics are eligible for these fellowships. Students will receive a stipend of $560/week and subsidized college housing, as well as funds to cover research supplies. On campus housing is on a first come first served basis.

INBRE Summer Fellowships
An INBRE (IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence) grant from the NIH will support 8, 9 or 10 week fellowships for students wishing to conduct independent summer research addressing biomedical questions, including questions relating to comparative functional genomics. Students will receive a $560 weekly stipend and subsidized college housing, as well as funds to cover research supplies. On-campus housing is on a first come first served basis.

An INBRE (IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence) grant from the NIH will support 8, 9 or 10 week fellowships for students wishing to conduct independent summer research addressing biomedical questions, particularly questions relating to comparative functional genomics, at any of the INBRE institutions in the state of Maine. Students will receive a $560 weekly stipend and housing, a food stipend or on-campus dining (at some institutions), as well as funds to cover research supplies. Because this fellowship is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Maine INBRE (IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence) program, projects submitted for the fellowship should have some biomedical relevance, with a preference for projects in the general field of comparative functional genomics (broadly defined). On-campus housing will be on a first-come first-serve basis.

James Stacy Coles Summer Research Fellowship and Littlefield Summer Research Fellowship
The James Stacy Coles and Littlefield Summer Research Fellowships are funded departmental fellowships that provide students with an exceptional hands-on research opportunity. The fellows are expected to participate in a program of summer research. The College makes housing available beginning just after commencement and continuing through the summer. The program will provide each fellow with a $560/week stipend and money for research supplies. The summer program begins in early June.

Dana Walker Mayo Summer Research Fellowship
Student recipients of the fellowships will work closely with a Bowdoin faculty member on a mutually acceptable research project, full time, for eight to ten weeks in the summer. The fellows will receive a $560/week stipend; housing is subsidized for summer research students.

Summer Grants
The Classics Department will provide 2-3 grants of up to $1,000 in support of student participation in archaeological excavations that investigate ancient Greek, ancient Roman or ancient Mediterranean cultures, or for summer language study in Greek or Latin.

Freedman Summer Research Fellowship in Computer Science
Freedman Summer Research Fellowships were established by Dr. Alan M. Freedman of the Class of 1976 and his wife, Nancy, to support and encourage Bowdoin undergraduates whose field of concentration is computer science to engage in faculty-student summer research projects in interdisciplinary pursuits.

Gerald J. Weinberger Fellowship in Computer Science
Weinberger Fellowships were established by Gerald J. Weinberger primarily to fund student research projects in Computer Science. These projects can take several forms, including independent studies, honors projects, summer research (either independently or with Bowdoin faculty), and other projects approved by the department.

Volpe Summer Research Fellowship in Digital and Computational Studies
The generous support of Bowdoin alumnus Michael Volpe (1997) has created a fellowship designed to support 8-10 weeks of student summer research under the mentorship of a Bowdoin faculty member in Digital and Computational Studies. While the projects are independent, students are encouraged to identify research topics that fall under the umbrella of existing faculty research portfolios or would address an emerging area of interest for the program. Students will gain firsthand experience with the research design process, data creation, analysis, and communication. In Summer 2023, the fellowship will provide an award of $560 per week and subsidized college housing if applicable.

Environmental Studies Maine-Based Fellowships
Students are placed with organizations in Maine. These ten-week fellowships provide students with the opportuinty to work and serve in the local community on environmental issues while strengthening campus community partnerships. Fellows receive stipend of $6,000 and are eligible for on-campus housing. Open to students who have completed at least two of the Environmental Studies core courses. 

Cooke Environmental Community-Based Research Fellowship
An opportunity is provided for a student to conduct community-based research with a faculty mentor within the field of environmental studies in partnership with an organization. The fellowship can be based at Bowdoin College or at an off-campus location. Fellows receive a stipend of up to $5,500. Open to students who have completed at least two of the Environmental Studies core courses. 

The Hroswaith Fund for Study in the German-Speaking Countries
Funding from this award must be used for student travel to/from and participation in an intensive, immersive summer language course. Preference will be given to programs held in Germany, Austria, or German-speaking Switzerland, but upon request and application, high-quality programs located in the U.S. (such as Middlebury) are also eligible. The award process follows the guidelines of Office of Student Fellowships; the summer language course grant can be combined with smaller grants from Hroswaith administered by the department as well as grants from other funding sources.

Golz Fellowship
Alfred E. Golz fellowships support research opportunities and internships for History majors and minors during the summer months. These fellowships have been made possible by a generous gift from Ronald Golz ’56 in memory of his father. Each fellowship provides a $560/week stipend per student, for eight to ten weeks, and subsidized college housing if applicable.

Paul Nyhus Travel Grants
For travel, lodging, and primary research-related expenses. $4,000 grants available during Summer or Winter break. $500 grants available during Summer, Winter, and Spring break. Mini grants up to $250 available on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.

Latin American Studies Research Award
The Latin American Studies Research Award is meant to facilitate student research in Latin America and/or the Caribbean, and on Latinos and Latinas in the United States. The on-site research can be conducted during the summer months, between semesters, or to extend off-campus study experiences. Up to $5,000 will be awarded, which includes a $560 weekly honorarium for a maximum of eight weeks, and up to $1,800 in travel and research funds.

Paller Neuroscience Research Fellowships
Funds are available to support research both during the summer and during the academic year. It is expected that research conducted with Paller support will culminate in honors in neuroscience. Students awarded both summer and academic year fellowships will receive the summer stipend, the academic year stipend, and funds to cover research supplies and travel to the Society for Neuroscience meeting.

Kaempfer Summer Art Grant
The Kaempfer Fund allows students to pursue independent projects during the summer. The grant consists of a maximum of $1,000 to allay expenses, such as supplies and travel, associated with the project. The cohesive project must be developed over the course of the summer. The grant is intended to encourage the student to work independently with advice from a faculty member to execute a long-term studio project outside of the context of the classroom.

McKee Photography Grant
The McKee Photography Grant is intended to support annually one student photography project during the summer months and a public lecture and exhibition of the project upon completion in the fall. The grant consists of up to $1000 to allay expenses, such as supplies and travel, associated with the project.
