Fellowships

Time: 8-10 weeks

Pay: $590/week, funds to cover research supplies

Housing: Subsidized college housing. On-campus housing is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Eligibility: Students working with faculty in the biological sciences (biology, biochemistry, neuroscience), or students working on biological problems in the physical sciences and mathematics

Time: 8-10 weeks

Pay: A $590 weekly stipend and funds to cover research supplies

Undergraduate: Students wishing to conduct independent summer research addressing biomedical questions, including questions relating to comparative functional genomics.

Post-graduate: Offered to a graduating senior to continue working on their ongoing research project with a goal of making progress towards publication.

Because this fellowship is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Maine INBRE program, projects submitted for the fellowship should have some biomedical relevance, with a preference for projects in the general field of comparative functional genomics (broadly defined). For more information, please visit the INBRE fellowships website:  https://inbre.maineidea.net/student-training/undergraduate-research-fellowships/

Overview

Funds are available to support research both during the summer and during the academic year. It is expected that research conducted with Paller support will culminate in honors in neuroscience. Students awarded both summer and academic year fellowships will receive the summer stipend, the academic year stipend, and funds to cover research supplies and travel to the Society for Neuroscience meeting.

Summer

Time: 8-10 weeks

Pay: $590/week, funds to cover research supplies and travel to the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience

Academic Year

Pay: $4000, funds to cover research supplies and travel to the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience

Part A: Briefly describe the future you see yourself pursuing, and how this neuroscience fellowship fits into those plans. Note: The research proposal [(1) above] should include similar information, though less space is available—feel free to use some or all of the same material in this statement. This gives you a little more space (depending on how much you used for the project description) and focuses more on your future plans than on your major, but there could be significant overlap between these statements. (1-2 double-spaced pages).

Part B: This component of the Paller application consists of a short, independently written research proposal. It should discuss a significant issue or problem in neuroscience that is of particular interest to you. It may, for example, be a problem or question that has arisen in the course of your classroom or laboratory work. It should, however, be unrelated to your actual research proposal. Your proposal must include a description of the issue or problem, a specific aspect of that problem that could be approached in a research project, and the experiments you would suggest be done to address the question. This should be written as a research proposal, including background, the question you are addressing and the hypothesis you are proposing to test, the experiments (including controls) needed to test the hypothesis, and the ways in which you would interpret the predicted experimental data. References and figures may be included.  

Document Guidelines:

The proposal should be no more than two pages, single-spaced, with a minimum font size of 11 (Times) or 10 (Arial), and a minimum line spacing of 12 points. The proposals will be read and evaluated by the neuroscience faculty, so you can assume a reasonably knowledgeable audience.
