Western Foothills Community

Explore the rolling hills of western Maine while learning about rural living, food security, and the history of the region.

Based in Newry, students on this trip will have the opportunity to explore Maine’s Western Foothills, a region known for its rolling mountains, close-knit community, and deep-rooted traditions of resilience and mutual support. Participants will engage with local organizations such as the Bethel Food Pantry and Alan Day Community Garden, which play vital roles in addressing food insecurity and supporting families across the region. Hands-on experiences on this trip will offer valuable insight into rural community care and grassroots service efforts. Accommodations will include access to kitchen and shower facilities.

Sample Itinerary

Wednesday, August 26: Depart Bowdoin and drive up to Newry! Settle into your housing and then work with Bethel Food Pantry on a project.

Thursday, August 27: Explore the area, and then work with a local garden to address food insecurity.

Friday, August 28: A day of service—work with a local historical society and then Alan Day Community Garden on various projects—then visit the farmer’s market!

Saturday, August 29: Wake up, move out of your housing, and return to Bowdoin!
