Hurricane Island Community

Students on this trip will have the opportunity to explore Maine’s coast—with a base in Hurricane Island, a remote hideaway off Vinalhaven home to research and education programs. The students will start their journey in Rockland, home to over two hundred nonprofits as well as a flourishing fishing community and engage with partners such as the AIO Food Pantry, before moving to Hurricane Island and interacting with topics such as food insecurity and coastal sustainability. Accommodations will include access to kitchen and limited shower facilities.

Note: This trip requires travel to and from Vinalhaven and Hurricane Island on multiple ferries and boats. Also, due to water conservation efforts on Hurricane Island, where participants are staying, students on this trip are asked to shower once or twice on this three-night trip. Sample Itinerary

Wednesday, August 26: Depart Bowdoin, drive up to Rockland, and volunteer with AIO Food Pantry to keep the community fed. Travel out on the ferry to Vinalhaven and then Hurricane Island—and finally settle in!

Thursday, August 27: Explore Hurricane Island, and then help the Center for Science and Leadership with a service project to upkeep their facilities!

Friday, August 28: Travel to Vinalhaven, help with a project there, and then swim in the ocean!

Saturday, August 29: Move out of your housing, reflect, and return to Bowdoin!
