See where the sun first shines on the United States as you explore Lubec, Maine, the easternmost town in the contiguous United States.

Students on this trip will have the opportunity to explore Lubec, the easternmost town in the United States, known for its dramatic coastal landscapes, working waterfront, and rich ecological diversity. Participants will connect with local organizations such as the Downeast Institute and Maine Coast Heritage Trust, learning about coastal ecosystems, community-based science, and sustainability—and maybe even catch the sunrise from West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. Accommodations will include access to kitchen and shower facilities.

Sample Itinerary

Wednesday, August 26: Depart Bowdoin, drive up to Lubec, tour the Downeast Institute on the way, and move into your housing!

Thursday, August 27: Work with a local historical society to help upkeep their collections, explore the area, and see Maine's coast!

Friday, August 28: Volunteer with a local land trust to do some trailwork, and then take a dip in the ocean!

Saturday, August 29: Catch the sunrise at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, move out of your housing, and return to Bowdoin!
