Bowdoin College HDHP - Option 1

A HDHP is a health insurance plan that has a higher deductible – the amount of medical expenses you pay each year before coverage kicks in.

While the deductible is higher with this type of plan, the employee contributions (the regular amount you pay each pay period for the coverage) is typically lower than a traditional health plan.  High deductible plans don’t begin to pay the cost of medical expenses until after you’ve met the deductible.

Meeting the Deductible

Preventive services along with certain preventive medications are covered at 100% in-network (not subject to the deductible).  All other covered services (including prescription drugs) are subject to the deductible ($1,600/individual; $3,200/family) before the Plan pays a portion of the cost.

Once you meet the deductible, you and the Plan share the cost of your care (coinsurance). Once the out-of-pocket maximum ($3,000/individual; $6,000/family) is reached, the plan pays 100% for the remainder of the calendar year.

Preventive Care Services

Preventive services are covered at 100% in-network along with certain preventive medications (not subject to the deductible).  Routine physicals, mammograms, Pap smears, and colonoscopies are covered at 100% when they are done as part of a recommended screening schedule.  The recommended screenings and immunizations can change depending on your gender, age, and family health history.

An in-network routine eye exam is also covered at 100% once per calendar year.

Health Savings Account (HSA) for HDHP Option 1

Eligible employees enrolling in one of the HDHP options will receive a HSA contribution from the College and can also choose to make their own contributions to the HSA account through pre-tax payroll deduction.  The College’s HSA contribution amounts for 2024 are listed below.  For new employees enrolling after January 1st, the College’s HSA contribution will be pro-rated based on the number of full months during the calendar year the employee was enrolled in HDHP coverage through the College.  HSA accounts are administered by Fidelity Investments.
