Maine Paid Family Medical Leave

The Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program starts on May 1, 2026. This program provides all employees with eligible Maine earnings up to twelve weeks of job protected paid leave for certain leave situations per benefit year. A benefit year is defined as the twelve-month period looking forward from the beginning of the week an employee first takes Maine PFML. This new paid leave benefit along with the College's absence and leave benefits, will allow Bowdoin employees greater acces to paid job-protected leave.

What leave types are provided by Maine PFML?

Maine PFML benefits provide employees with eligible Maine earnings up to twelve weeks of paid leave per benefit year, which is defined as the twelve-month period looking forward from the beginning of the week Maine PFML is first taken.

Leave provided by Maine PFML will run concurrently with federal and state family and medical leave provisions (Maine FML and Federal FMLA). They are not designed to be used separately.  Leave taken under Maine FML or Federal FMLA in the 12 months before your Maine PFML benefits begin will count against your available 12 weeks of Maine PFML entitlement. The following leave reasons are covered:

  • Medical leave: When a serious health condition prevents you from working.
  • Parental leave: To bond with a child after birth, or with a child placed through adoption or foster care.
  • Family Care leave: To care for a family member with a serious health condition.
  • Military leave: To prepare for a family member’s military deployment.
  • Safe leave: To seek safety or legal assistance if you or a family member is experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault.

The leave is job protected if you’ve been employed by the College for at least 120 consecutive days when you go out of work. Leave can be taken intermittently on a reduced work schedule basis or as full-time leave.
