FAQ for Student Employees

Can student employees work remotely?

The College is working on processes and procedures to allow a small number of student employees to work remotely.  At this time, there will be restrictions and limitations on the number of students working remotely.  Students currently living outside of the US will not be permitted to work remotely.

How will the College determine which students can work remotely?

The basis for which students can and cannot work remotely will depend on individual jobs, the critical need to support a department, and the access/ability for the student to work remotely.  Not all student employees will be approved to work remotely.  Your supervisor will submit a request form for remote work and if approved, they will reach out to discuss the logistics.  Do not begin working until you have received notification of approval by SEO.

For students who will remain on campus, unable to go home, can they continue to work in their student jobs?

Yes, currently students living on-campus can continue to work in their student jobs.  If Bowdoin requires that only essential staff report to work, this will be revisited.  If the job is one where they can perform remote work from their dorms, that may be allowed.  More details to come if that happens.

Students who are living off-campus, but locally, will not be permitted to work on-campus (they will need to be approved for remote work).

Will student employees receive pay for the remainder of the semester?

No, students will not receive pay for the remainder of the semester if they are not performing work.  However, student who are approved to work remotely will log hours in Workday and be paid accordingly.   Please see the question/answer below on student employees with a financial aid award that includes a campus job component, as many of these students will receive an adjustment to their aid award in lieu of working on-campus.

How will aided students meet their work expectations for the spring semester?

For aided students who have been employed on-campus this academic year, there will be an adjustment to their Bowdoin grant for the remaining weeks of the semester.  The adjustment will be applied to the student account, not biweekly earnings through payroll.  Depending on account status, students will receive a refund from the Bursar’s Office issued to their designated bank account in Workday or via paper check.

Students remaining on campus will not be eligible for this adjustment (as they will be able to work on-campus).  Students studying abroad spring semester will also not be eligible as their work expectation for the semester had already been waived).

How did we determine the adjustment to the aid package?

We prorated the standard work expectation for aided students based on the number of remaining “work” weeks in the semester.
