Course Auditing FAQ

When I complete the Course Audit Request Form, will I only see courses available to audit?

If I am interested in auditing a course that is not on the list of courses approved for auditing, may I contact the professor to see if it would be ok for me to audit the course?

  • No, all courses available for auditing are included in the list—faculty members will not be able to accept auditors in courses not on the preapproved list and should not be contacted about doing so.

How quickly will I receive confirmation that I have been approved to audit my requested course?

  • You will receive confirmation by email that you have been approved to audit a course within five business days of submitting your form.

May I request to audit a course in person at the Office of the Registrar?

  • No. The only way to request to audit a course at Bowdoin is to complete the Course Audit Request Form. The registrar's office will no longer be available for any technical support.
  • Bowdoin will offer two "technical support" open houses for Association of Bowdoin Friends members to help them with the auditing application process.
  • For spring 2024, those open houses will be held on:
    • Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 2:00-4:00pm and
    • Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 2:00-4:00pm
    • Both open houses will be held in Lancaster Lounge, Moulton Union.

Can I sign up for a waiting list for courses that are filled at the time I submit my requests?

  • No. There will be no waiting lists available and only courses with auditor slots available will be visible when requesting to audit a course.

May I audit more than one course each semester?

  • No. To allow as many community members as possible the opportunity to audit a course, we limit each auditor to one course per semester.

What technical skills do I need to audit courses at Bowdoin?

  • To audit any course at Bowdoin requires auditors to be comfortable with technology—information about the course and assignments will be delivered via Canvas (a software platform), and many readings and other course materials will only be available digitally. If a course requires more advanced technical skills, it will be noted in the Course Audit Request Form.

Are high school students eligible to audit courses at Bowdoin?

  • A high school student may audit a Bowdoin class when permission is granted by the course instructor in consultation with the student's high school guidance department.

If I am a teaching fellow, local high school student, or a student at a Maine college and would like to register to audit or register for a Bowdoin course, what should I do?

  • Please contact registrar@bowdoin.edu for instructions and do not submit a Course Auditing Request Form.
