Institutional Fellowships

Established in 2011 with a gift from Alan M. Christenfeld '73, this fund supports undergraduate research with a preference for work in the social sciences and humanities.

First-years, sophomores, and juniors may apply. Current seniors are ineligible.

Students opt to carry out 8, 9, or 10 weeks of research. Students should discuss with their faculty mentors what would be the appropriate duration of their fellowship and consider their own research goals and availability as well as their faculty mentors’ availability when making this decision.  Selected fellows are expected to commit full-time effort to their research project and faculty mentors must approve the duration of the fellowship period.

The Alan M. Christenfeld Fellowship carries an award of $425/week.

If requested and approved during the application process, fellows may also be reimbursed for up to $500 for justified research related expenses (e.g., laboratory/art supplies, analytical costs, and travel beyond the local area to conduct field work or to visit an archive).

Should a faculty mentor feel that a fellow is not making sufficient progress toward the research goals set forth in the fellow's proposal, the College reserves the right to discontinue funding.

The Martha Reed Coles Fund supports fellowships for students doing research under the guidance of a faculty/staff member. Coles Fellowships in the Arts and Humanities are intended to support substantial participation in an arts or humanities research project by a student under the direction of a faculty member who is independently interested in the area under study.

Edwards, this fellowship is designed to foster summer research and learning by students in the creative and performing arts. This may be accomplished through faculty-mentored and/or structured training in the creative or performing arts (including music, theater and dance, the fine arts, creative writing, and film studies). Fellowship recipients may study under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member; however, opportunities that cannot be adequately replicated under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member, yet are deemed essential to a student's academic program, may also be undertaken with support from this fellowship. Examples of such opportunities include, but are not limited to, participation in major summer festivals, pre-professional training, or internships.

Examples of opportunities that can be supported by an Edwards Summer Fellowship include, but are not limited to, participation in major summer festivals, pre-professional training, or internships.  The award may be used for any combination of travel expenses, tuition costs related to a formal training program, instruction fees, or a stipend for the Fellow.

Preference is given to first years, sophomores, and juniors who expect to carry out their project during the following academic year.

The Edward E. Langbein Sr. Summer Fellowship is a gift of the Bowdoin Parents Association in memory of a former president and secretary of the Association. A Langbein Fellowship is awarded annually to an undergraduate or recent graduate to enable the recipient to participate in summer research or advanced study directly related to his or her major field or life work.

The Micoleau Family Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts was established by Charles ’63 and Judith Micoleau and their son, Tyler Micoleau ’91. It supports a fellowship to Bowdoin undergraduates to foster research and/or structured training in the creative and performing arts (including music, theater and dance, the fine arts, creative writing, and film studies). Preference will be given to fellowships in theater with a secondary preference to those students whose state of residence is Maine. Fellowship recipients may study under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member; however, opportunities that cannot be adequately replicated under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member, yet are deemed essential to a student’s academic program (e.g., participation in major summer festivals, pre-professional training, internships) may also be undertaken.

The Ellen M. P'78 and Herbert M. Patterson '42, P'78 Research Fellowship was established in 2009 by Ellen Patterson, widow of Herbert Patterson.  This fund celebrates Ellen and Herb's long association with the College and honors the couple's daughter Amy Baird '78 and her two children, their grandchildren, Bruce Baird '08 and Emily Baird '09.  This fellowship is designed to support students engaged in research, with preference to students conducting research in the humanities over the summer months.

An undergraduate research fellowship program originally established in 1959, this fund was renamed in 1968 the Surdna Foundation Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program in recognition of gifts from the Surdna Foundation. Each Surdna fellow participates in summer research or advanced study directly related to his or her major field or life work.

Students apply as juniors. Fellowships are awarded to highly qualified students and are carried out either the summer preceding the fellow's senior year or during the fellow's senior academic year.

The Nellie C. Watterson Summer Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts was established in 2007 by Paul and Jennifer Korngiebel, classes of '88 and '87 respectively, to honor Professor William Watterson and his mother. The Watterson Summer Fellowship is designed to foster summer research and learning by students in the creative and performing arts. This may be accomplished through faculty-mentored and/or structured training in the creative or performing arts (including music, theater and dance, the fine arts, creative writing, and film studies). Fellowship recipients may study under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member; however, opportunities that cannot be adequately replicated under the direction of a Bowdoin faculty member, yet are deemed essential to a student's academic program, may also be undertaken with support from this fellowship.
