Exploring Teacher-Student Relationships in Special Education

For my research this summer, I’m studying student-teacher relationships in special education. I’ve been spending my time as a participant-observer in a high school special education summer school, volunteering as support staff in 9th and 10th grade classrooms, while simultaneously taking field notes about the interactions between teachers and their students that I'm observing. I’ve learned a lot so far, both in terms of my research, and about what it’s like to work in the field of special education.

College Matchmaking: from Eas Los to East Coast

Hello everyone! My name is Simon, and this summer I'm conducting a research entitled 'From Admittance to Acceptance: Class, Cultural Capital, and Socialization at New England Liberal Arts Institutions'. I am conducting field research on the college application and transition process of first generation minorities, drawing from Pierre Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital. I reintegrated myself in various non-profits that assist first generation students from the inner-city Los Angeles area to interview them and record their experiences. In short, I hope to bring a clearer understanding of how schools like Bowdoin and non-profits can better accommodate and help these students thrive in predominantly white and affluent spaces.
