SEVIS Fees and Visa Fees Prospective

J-1 Visa recipients are required to pay certain fees in order to obtain their visas and enter the United States.

The SEVIS Fee charged by the Department of Homeland Security (currently $180) for the costs of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). At the time you receive your DS-2019 from Bowdoin, you will receive instructions on how to pay the SEVIS fee.

Visa fees may also be incurred by prospective J-1 visa holders. Please refer to the Department of State website for more information and fee amounts.

Additional fees may be applicable for visa issuance. For more information on fees the J-1 recipient should review the Department of State website.

As a result of these federal regulations, Bowdoin College will require all J-1 visa holder as well as their J-2 dependents to participate in the International Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan (ISS SP – Gold) that includes United HealthCare Global.

It is considered a violation of status if you fail to maintain insurance coverage. You are under a continuing obligation to inform Bowdoin of any lapse in coverage. You will be required to meet with Human Resources upon your arrival at the College to hear about the insurance benefits and how to access those benefits for the greatest coverage. The International Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan that includes United Healthcare Global is rated A- by A. & M. Best Rating.
