Resources and Opportunities

Computer science students have access to state-of-the-art computer labs with a variety of software.

Student Laboratories

Student laboratories provide access to a wide range of programming languages and software that gives computer science students experience with the modern technologies and software environments that they will encounter in graduate school or industry.

The HPC (high performance computing) Laboratory

The HPC and algorithms lab provides access to a grid of Linux servers. Students have the opportunity to work on research that focuses on efficient algorithms for processing large data.

Robotics Laboratory

The robotics lab contains a variety of state-of-the-art robots, including pioneer AT-DXs, Sony Aibos, and Aldebaran Naos. Students have the opportunity to work on independent projects using the robots and to participate in robot-related faculty research. Robotic soccer, for example, is a major ongoing research project in the department.

West Trek is a Bowdoin Career Planning program for students to explore career opportunities in technology through a trip to California over spring break. West Trek helps put students who would not otherwise be exposed to California’s tech culture in contact with graduates working for innovative companies. Alumni hosted student visits at:

  • Airbnb
  • Pinterest
  • Okta
  • Collective Health
  • Fitbit
  • Google
  • Apple
  • Lyft

A book is awarded annually in the fall to a senior who has achieved the highest distinction in the computer science major program.
