Visual Literacy for Young Learners

Looking, Thinking, and Learning

Our Visual Literacy Program engages young learners with art and visual media from different cultures and eras as they practice critical thinking skills.

Art enhances many disciplines, including history, literature, language, and science.  Visual literacy is a rewarding skill for learning and for life. It also adds to curricula aligned with the Maine State Learning Results.

Our programs use the Museum's collections and exhibitions to guide students to think about art and other visual media. We offer guided tours of Museum galleries to enrich classroom learning as well as creative learning activities for at-home and family use.

Students will develop tools to respond to art through an art vocabulary, close looking, and practice in drawing connections with what they already know.

Learn from Home: Activities for young learners and families are at [link to Family Activities]. Please check back soon as we develop more ways to Look, Think, and Learn! [link].

K-12 Tours At the Museum: We offer guided tours in support of schools and educators across Maine. NOTE: The Museum is not currently open for tours or programs; see Learn from Home.
