College Houses

Programming Highlights

The major responsibility that Houses have is developing and executing events for the entire Bowdoin community and sometimes Brunswick community. There are several components to putting together these events. Houses take part in weekly meetings where House members come together, review progress, come up with new ideas, and delegate responsibility. These meetings are where decisions are voted upon and made regarding the kinds of events the members and affiliates want to have. All House residents and affiliates can vote on events and decisions regarding the House.

Once an idea is suggested and a program is approved, responsibility for the logistics is oftenhouse meeting delegated among the house members. A budget is approved for the event by the House. Event hosts register the event and are responsible for hosting the event.  Decoration, advertising, scheduling, venue, purchasing, reimbursements, set up, clean up, invitations for special guests, food, music, and entertainment are aspects of events House members are responsible for. Executing events requires delegation and group effort with several people taking responsibility for ensuring the success of the event. Often times house members will review events in order to judge its success and find ways to improve programming in the future.

The semester kicked off with the Inter-House Olympics, a traditional first-year orientation event that brings together the first-year bricks with their paired House. The competition is fierce, the events this year included: dizzy bat races, tug-of-war, three-legged races, and pictionary.  Helmreich House won the competition this year with an impressive showing of spirit and skill.  Howell baseball
