Resources and Opportunities

The Department of Theater and Dance offers students the ability to participate through classes, perform in departmental shows, work backstage, and join one of the many student theater and dance groups on campus.

Facilities

Bowdoin has a deep and historic commitment to the role of the arts in a liberal education, which is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and numerous opportunities for participation. The Department of Theater and Dance manages Pickard and Wish Theaters, five rehearsal and dance studios, a performance lab, and seminar rooms.

Scholarships

Each year the department offers Bowdoin students a scholarship award for summer study in theater or dance. The Rutan Scholarship Award for Summer Study in Theater or Dance is given to a student with demonstrated motivation and exceptional promise in theater technique, directing, production skills, dance technique, or choreography.

Work-Study

The Department of Theater and Dance employs a team of students that assist in all areas of technical theater ranging from eclectics, carpentry, sound and video, stage management, and more. Students work under the supervision of department technical staff with expertise in technical theater.

Winterbreak in New York City

Each January, Bowdoin theater and dance students travel to New York City for a unique learning experience opportunity. Students attend various performance festivals, regional and experimental theaters, Broadway shows, and more. Students have the opportunity to meet with alumni working professionally in theater and dance.

Student Performance Groups

In addition to the Department of Theater and Dance, Bowdoin has a variety of student-led performance groups on campus. Sponsored by student activities, these groups meet casually or more formally to create different types of performances throughout the year.
