Checks and Preventative Maintenance

Resources for learning to fix and maintain your bike

The best way to learn how to fix and maintain your bike is to start doing it! There are resources online and around campus that can help you get started.

Where you can take your bike to get it fixed or tuned up

  • On campus: Yellow Bike Club open mechanic hours. However, depending on mechanic's workload and the amount of work that needs to be done on your bike, they may direct you to take it into a shop.
  • Off-campus: Center Street Cycles, The Rusty Crank, and Gorham Bike and Ski are all local bike shops.

How to tell when it's time to take your bicycle to a mechanic

Preventative maintenance can help your bike last longer between big fixes, but sometimes it needs a bit more attention. Take your bicycle in to a mechanic if:

  • It no longer functions (ie., the wheels don't roll properly or the brakes don't work)
  • Your bicycle is making a lot of noise, especially squeaking
  • It has been over a year since the bike has had any maintenance
