Venues for Student Research
Bowdoin College and the field of Russian and Slavic Studies offer many possibilities for undergraduate students to share their research with audiences of peers and professors, whether in presentations at conferences and symposia or in published articles.
Conferences and Symposia
Bowdoin College President's Summer Research Symposium
- showcases research projects completed at Bowdoin during the previous summer, held each fall
- Colby-Bowdoin-Bates Russian Student Research Symposium
- held at Colby College each spring as the culminating (evening) event in the Colby Liberal Arts Symposium (CLAS)
- European and Eurasian Undergraduate Research Symposium
- held at the University of Pittsburgh each April; applications due in January
- Stanford U.S.-Russia Forum (SURF)
- highly competitive program that selects 20 U.S. and 20 Russian students annually to collaborate on research in public policy, business, economics and many other disciplines; includes a fall conference in Moscow and spring conference at Stanford University in California

- published online and in PDF annually spring and fall; features outstanding undergraduate and graduate student work on subjects related to Russia, the USSR, and/or any state formerly a part of the USSR, including art, history, literature, politics, and international relations
- Verges: Germanic & Slavic Studies in Review (at the University of Victoria)
- peer-reviewed journal that features outstanding work by graduate students and upper-level undergraduates on topics relating to literature, linguistics, pedagogy, culture, history, art, music, film, politics, and memory studies
- The UC Undergraduate Journal of Slavic and East/Central European Studies (at UCLA)
- peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate student research, with an annual submission deadline in early October; publishes work on Slavic and East/Central European topics in any discipline
- Samizdat (at McGill University)
- annual peer-reviewed student journal that publishes both academic and creative writing in Russian or on the topics relevant to Russia and Russian-speaking countries
