Student Honors and Awards

The Russian department recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in the study of Russian, and many of our students are successful in prize and fellowship competitions both locally and nationally.

Departmental Awards

Prize for Excellence in Russian Language and Literature 

This prize, established in 2002 by Jane Knox, professor of Russian emerita, is awarded to a graduating senior who has achieved highest distinction as a Russian major.

Russian Scholar Laureate 

This award, given by the American Council of Teachers of Russian, recognizes the best qualities of a post-secondary Russian student: an unfailing love for all things Russian; a passion for the language, literature, and culture; a commitment to excellence; and an enthusiasm for knowledge and cultural literacy.

Departmental Honors

Students graduating with honors from the Russian department are Russian majors who have written a substantial honors thesis in their senior year that makes a genuine contribution to knowledge or understanding in the discipline of Russian studies. For the student to receive honors, the thesis must receive a grade of at least A-.

Bowdoin Awards

The College makes available a wide variety of awards to support student research and unpaid internships, and Russian department students have been very successful in receiving such funding. Please see the Grants and Fellowships page for more information about these opportunities.

Miscellaneous Awards

Russian majors at Bowdoin College have demonstrated their excellence in a wide range of national-level competitions, ranging from the annual Russian national essay contest sponsored by ACTR and the Critical Language Scholarship for summer Russian study, to prestigious post-graduation awards such as the Fulbright research and English teaching fellowships.
