Student Opportunities
We hope that the Observatory gives everyone the opportunity to observe the night sky with a telescope.
As a Bowdoin student, you have access to the following opportunities:
In-class Observations
Guideded telescope observations take place as part of PHYS 1510: Introductory Astronomy,
Advanced observational techniques are introduced in PHYS 3030: Methods of Observational Astrophysics. Other Astronomy courses may also provide an opportunity to observe at the Observatory
Observatory Technicians/Telescope Assistants
For nighttime observations, maintenance, and calibration we rely on the support of student observatory technicians. The general requirements are:
- Completed PHYS 1510: Introductory Astronomy
- Nighttime availability: scheduling of nighttime observing depends on the weather; general set-up and clean-up times are around 6-10pm
- Standing and Lifting: Telescope Operations require standing for extended periods, as well as lifting the Pentafleet telescopes (60 lbs) onto piers.
We do not require any experience with telescopes and extensive training is available. Please contact Prof. Fe McBride if you're interested.
Astrophotography Equipment
We have a selection of astrophotography equipment for loan. Please inquire with Prof. Fe McBride.
