Albert E. “Ted” Gibbons Jr. ’58 to Receive 2021 Alumni Service Award
By Bowdoin NewsFor his long and outstanding devotion to the College, Albert E. “Ted” Gibbons Jr. ’58 has been named the recipient of the 2021 Alumni Service Award, the highest honor given by the Bowdoin Alumni Council.
The award is presented each year in recognition of an individual’s record of volunteer service to the College.
In the six decades since graduating from Bowdoin, Gibbons has served the College in more than a dozen distinct volunteer roles, from the grassroots level to the rarified position as a member of the governing boards.
Two close Bowdoin friends said of Gibbons that his “longtime service to Bowdoin has been a true passion” for him, and that year after year he has “demonstrated outstanding loyalty” to the College.
Gibbons’s enthusiastic but thoughtful leadership has been a common thread through his many volunteer engagements with the College, which includes time as a member of the Alumni Council, during which he served a term as the youngest-ever president of that body.
In addition to that leadership role, Gibbons also served for twelve years on the board of overseers, and has also been a class agent and associate class agent and a Reunion Committee member, as well as in such other varied capacities as campaign volunteer, Leadership Gift Committee member, and member of the Bowdoin Alumni Schools Interviewing Committee (BASIC).
It seems wherever Bowdoin has asked for his expertise, energy, and time, Gibbons has willingly stepped in.
His work on behalf of the Bowdoin Rowing Association has drawn particular praise from his peers. An energetic fundraiser and advocate for the sport at Bowdoin, he is widely viewed as one of the most impactful supporters in that program’s history and, in recognition of that important role, the Bowdoin Rowing Association recently renamed its endowment the Ted Gibbons Family Rowing Fund in his honor.
The awards will be presented during this year’s virtual Reunion Weekend (June 3–6, 2021). Read about the others who will be celebrated.
