The Bowdoin Invitational Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Student Internships and Honors Fred Thorne ’57, H’05

One hundred golfers teed up at Essex County Club in Manchester, Massachusetts for the annual Bowdoin Invitational Golf Tournament on September 13th. The tournament, in Honor of Fred Thorne ’57, H’05, is held each year to foster stronger connections between Polar Bears from across the generations while raising funds to support the College’s most pressing needs. Proceeds benefited the Student Internship Fund thanks to the generous support of tournament sponsors.

The day of golf concluded with a reception and dinner where golfers swapped stories from their rounds and purchased last-minute raffle tickets. Raffle items, which were donated by alumni and friends, included Red Sox and NY Rangers Tickets, a Cheeky Fly Fishing Reel, golf at Essex County Club, overnight stays at the Brunswick Hotel & Tavern and a beach house stay in Maine, Joseph Phelps Wine, Lighthouse Cellars Wine, and Galvin Green golf gear. Prizes were also awarded during dinner for 1st and 2nd place in both scramble and best ball formats. Low Scramble: Peter Webster ’62, P’91, P’94, Joe McKane ’63, Ted Gibbons ’58, P’96, Cliff Webster ’72, P’10, P’16. Low Net: Chad Rowley ’97, Mark McCormick ’96, Christian Whipple ’97, Bill Austin ’96. Low Gross: Jeff Sherman ’86, Michael Spencer, Dan Steinberg ’87, James Wood. Closest to the Pin winners were Sue Pardus ’86, Scott Stikeleather ’90, Joel Bradley ’70, P’00, and Chad Rowley ’97. President Clayton Rose addressed the crowd during dinner and honored Fred Throne ’57, H’05 through stories and a photo slideshow. Fred was an integral part of the Bowdoin community and was also a member at Essex County Club, so this tournament was near and dear to him. Fred’s family members in attendance were able to share in the celebration of his life and legacy.

A good time was had by all, we are very thankful to everyone who sponsored, donated and helped along the way.
