Breathing Resilience: Ruby Rumié's Narratives of Violence and Healing
Tuesday, April 30, 2024 | 7:00 p.m.
Kresge Auditorium
Join a visual journey and thought-provoking dialogue with the celebrated Colombian visual artist Ruby Rumié, moderated by Professors Nadia Celis and Irina Popescu. This event will unveil the depths of Rumié's internationally acclaimed body of work, illuminating her intricate narratives of gender-based, racial, and economic exclusion, and the restorative power of art. Experience the way Rumié's work acts as a transformative vessel, exposing the harsh realities of violence against women while simultaneously celebrating the resilient journey towards healing through a diverse palette of mediums, from monumental photographic pieces to ceremonial artistic expressions.
In addition to her public talk, on April 29th, Rumié will host a private artistic performance titled (Des)entierrros: A Healing Ceremony. This event will involve students in three current courses at Bowdoin, Professor Nadia Celis "A New Boom? Latin American Women Writers in the 21st Century”, Professor Margaret Boyle’s “Medicine, Literature, and Spanish” and Professor Irina Popescu’s “Rage: Women, Activism, and Performance in the Americas”. The ceremony will be held at the gardens of Copeland House, the new home to LACLaS.
Rumié's art has been displayed in museums and galleries worldwide, featuring projects like"Getsemaní:Subject | Object" (2007-14) at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, "Common Place" (2010-19) at the Museum of Visual Arts and the Museum of the Americas, OAS, "Divine Breath" (2014-19), and "Weaving Streets" (2016-17), along with her more recent works, "The Fall" and "Us." In recognition of her work, Rumié was honored with a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship in 2016 and subsequently with the Women Together Award in 2017. Ruby Rumié continues to live and create in her hometown Cartagena, Colombia.
