Tips from Faculty for a Successful First Semester

Remember:

You are registering for your fall semester courses. You will register for a different set of spring semester courses in November.

Do:

  • Select four courses that interest you!
  • Select a First-Year Writing Seminar (it’s required for incoming first years, but transfer students should not register for one!)
  • Sample broadly for your other three courses—consider both courses with which you have some experience, as well as those that you may not have heard about before.
  • Consider a distribution requirement. It’s not required for your first semester, but it could be a fun way to try out a new subject (remember that you listed some potential courses in the Academic Advising Survey you completed in Canvas).
  • Schedule your classes throughout the week (not all on the same days)
  • Check if the courses you are interested in taking require a prerequisite (course you need to take before you take this one) or placement survey, whether they have labs, discussion sections, or require additional time (such as for film screenings), and whether they have open seats (Workday will show all these details).

Don't:

  • Enroll in more than one science course with a lab section that is three hours or longer.
  • Schedule more than three classes on any one day—spread them out throughout the week.
  • Schedule more than two courses in a row. (10 minutes between classes is fine to get from one to another, but three courses in a row can be very hard—leave a break for yourself!)

Building Saved Schedules

Saved schedules in Workday allow you to put together potential schedules in advance of registration.

This allows you to:

  • experiment with multiple possible schedules in which your class times do not overlap, and
  • determine whether you are eligible to take a course.

To understand your eligibility for a course, please review your saved schedules very carefully; if there is a blue number next to a course listing under the column “Alerts”, please click on that to see what you need to fix before registration.

You should make multiple saved schedules. The first should be your “ideal” schedule and the alternate schedules should include courses you would like to take should you not get into one or more in your ideal schedule. For instructions on how to create a saved schedule go here.

Check to make sure you do not have any other holds

Log into Workday Student, access your profile and check your “Action Items and Holds”. More information on types of Holds can be found here.

In the 24-48 hours before 10 AM EDT on August 7, 2025 (remember, registration times are Eastern Time!):

  • Re-check your holds to ensure that you've resolved any holds that could keep you from registering.
  • Re-check your saved schedules.
  • Have any of your preferred sections filled? Plan and adjust now for changes that may have impacted your saved schedules.
  • Have you requested any needed prerequisite overrides? Have any requested prerequisite overrides been denied or sent back to you for more information? Update your requests or adjust your schedules as needed.

On the day you register:

  • Set an alarm and be logged in to Workday, via Okta, at least five minutes before your registration time.
  • Watch the system clock on your computer or phone, and when the clock strikes 10:00 AM Eastern time you can register from your saved schedule(s) or for individual courses.

After you register:

  • If you didn’t get into a class you wanted, and you were eligible for it, you will be added to the waitlist.
  • If a seat becomes available and you are next on the waitlist, you will receive an offer to take that seat in Workday. The offer will expire after 24 hours, so be sure to watch your notifications.
  • There are detailed instructions and information on waitlisting in TeamDynamix.
  • Registration will stay open for you through the first week of the semester to accept waitlist permissions, drop sections, and add sections with open seats or add yourself to section waitlists.
  • During the second week of the semester, students will be able to add sections with the permission of the instructor.
