I wrote for the Portland Press Herald this summer, working on human interest stories within the features section of the paper.

Collaborating with journalists, editors and administrators inspired me to venture further into writing opportunities in the future. I am going to be a correspondent for my study abroad program this fall, logging my experience in Granada. I would not have opened myself to this opportunity had it not been for my writing experiences this summer.

Getting the chance to write stories about musician’s estates, strawberry farms, a sailing camp for neurodivergent children, arts programs for immigrants, and roundups of Portland restaurants and events demonstrated the impact of local news on Maine’s strong communities. My favorite part of this internship was talking to such a wide variety of people. I loved honing my interview skills and getting the chance to immerse myself so fully in other people’s worlds. In learning what makes others excited about living, I found my own true excitement in sharing their stories, something I hope to continue doing for years to come.

Internship funded by the Annual Fund For Career Readiness.
