This summer, I interned on the Business Desk at the Portland Press Herald. The Portland Press Herald is Maine’s largest paid newspaper, owned by the Maine Trust for Local News, a non-profit committed to preserving local journalism in Maine.

My responsibilities included:

  • Writing daily and weekly stories covering news, local and small businesses, government, and education
  • Compiling a weekly People on the Move column about new hires and promotions across Maine businesses
Some of my favorite stories:
  • The reopening of the Maine State Aquarium
  • A local startup that 3D prints surfboards out of recycled fishing nets
  • In-person ticket offerings in Portland in response to concerns with Ticketmaster

Through this internship, I got to give back to my home state by telling the important stories of Mainers and got real-world experience as a reporter. My writing, interviewing, and editing skills have greatly improved, and I have a better understanding of local journalism.

Internship funded by the Gormley Internship Fund.
