Shadow Intern
By Austin Hiscoe ‘25Exploring the day-to-day environment of a bustling, dynamic medical facility
Thanks to the Bowdoin Funded Internship Grant, I was able to spend the summer shadowing different departments and learning the day to day environment of a medical facility. Departments and people shadowed included: Cardiology, Respiratory, Lab, Cath Lab, EVS, Maternity (Portsmouth, NH), Pharmacy (Portsmouth, NH), Doctor, and PA.
Parkland Medical Center is a hospital located in New Hampshire that is a part of a large variety of hospitals globally owned by HCA. Their mission statement is “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.”
This internship taught me the importance of team work and knowing ones role when providing care. I learned new medical terminology, specific anatomy functions, and even had staff take time to teach me procedures based on computer video demonstrations. For someone interested in healthcare, this opportunity allowed for a variety of different departments to learn from.
Internship funded by the CXD Funded Experiences and Skills Internship Fund.
