Turning an interest in dentistry into a passion

This summer, I had the opportunity to spend time at Casco Bay Dental in Brunswick, Maine. Casco Bay Dental is a private dental practice owned by Dr. Chadd Cockrell. He and his team are committed to delivering compassionate care to the Brunswick community (and beyond!) by offering the highest standard of dental care possible and forming genuine connections with their patients.

At the office, I was able to shadow various dental procedures, such as crown preparations, fillings, denture scans, veneer installations, and more. I also had the chance to shadow at the specialty offices that are connected with of Casco Bay Dental which allowed me to observe orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and pediatric dentistry. Outside of shadowing, I got to take part in the practice’s commitment to forming connections through lots of patient interactions. Additionally, I conducted minimal research on 3D scanning and intraoral scanners for the purpose of installing a 3D printer in the office for medical use.

My internship at Casco Bay Dental turned my interest in dentistry into a passion for dentistry. It felt like every day that I came to work, I learned something new. There was not a day that I left feeling demotivated or discouraged about my career choice; but rather felt more inspired to work towards this model of the future that I wish to have. The connections that I made during my internship were also highly meaningful. The dental assistants, Eva and Miranda, were incredibly kind and supportive. All of the hygienists (Nikki, Nicole, Lori) also made me feel like part of the team with their unwavering sweetness, as did the receptionists (Anna and Becky). And of course, Dr. Cockrell was amazing—I could not have asked to shadow a more genuine, more silly, or more patient dentist. While the X-rays, fillings, and crowns were intriguing, it was the connections I formed that truly stood out. The final valuable that I gained from my internship was perspective. I gained insight into how a dental officed operates, how days are not always perfect, and how sometimes you just have to figure things out. I personally wouldn’t trade my internship experience for anything, and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of the practice this past summer.
