Conservation, Recreation, and Land Use Planning Fellow
By Charlotte Clements ‘26The Brunswick Parks and Recreation Department maintains and manages public spaces in the Brunswick areas; it also administers recreation programs and events.
During my internship, I supported the Parks and Recreation Department in their effort to create a use and management plan for one of their properties (Fitzgerald and Former Maine Gravel Services). I gathered information about the ecology and history of the land and used that information in my two projects. One of my projects was a gamified citizen science app where visitors to the property can report species of interest that they find. My other project was an interpretive website which visitors will eventually be able to access through QR codes posted on the property.
My time working with the Parks and Recreation Department confirmed my desire to pursue a career where I can use computer science to aid conservation efforts. During my internship, I developed many different skills including public speaking, interviewing, and programming in Swift. My favorite part of the job was definitely the day I spent shadowing environmental consultants who were conducting wetland surveys on the property!
Internship funded by the Peter Buck Internship Fund.
