Writing for the Opinions Desk​ at the Portland Press Herald​

This summer, I worked on the opinions desk at the Portland Press Herald. The Press Herald is a daily newspaper that covers statewide events in Maine.

Throughout my internship, I was able to package up stories and headline them for the website. More importantly, however, I was given the opportunity to share my opinions with the Press Herald's audience via articles that I had written. I was fortunate to learn many things about myself, such as how to deal with writing about controversial topics such as affirmative action and the climate crisis. I also learned to deal with the hate I received in the comments as a result. I greatly improved my writing skills and learned how to work on a team alongside seasoned reporters and writers. This has allowed me to open doors into the world of journalism and has showed me that I can work well in a news-room and bring unique perspectives to the table when given the opportunity to do so.​

My favorite part of the summer was being able to write an article on the historic gutting of affirmative action by the US Supreme Court. I was able to bring perspective into how affirmative action enriched my education at Bowdoin and how my life will be negatively impacted with its removal.​
