Writing for the Opinions Desk at the Portland Press Herald
By Megh Bindra '25This summer, I worked on the opinions desk at the Portland Press Herald. The Press Herald is a daily newspaper that covers statewide events in Maine.
Throughout my internship, I was able to package up stories and headline them for the website. More importantly, however, I was given the opportunity to share my opinions with the Press Herald's audience via articles that I had written. I was fortunate to learn many things about myself, such as how to deal with writing about controversial topics such as affirmative action and the climate crisis. I also learned to deal with the hate I received in the comments as a result. I greatly improved my writing skills and learned how to work on a team alongside seasoned reporters and writers. This has allowed me to open doors into the world of journalism and has showed me that I can work well in a news-room and bring unique perspectives to the table when given the opportunity to do so.
My favorite part of the summer was being able to write an article on the historic gutting of affirmative action by the US Supreme Court. I was able to bring perspective into how affirmative action enriched my education at Bowdoin and how my life will be negatively impacted with its removal.
