Turning Green Conscious Kitchen Intern
By Cameron Mackenzie ‘22
Turning Green is a global student-led movement devoted to cultivating a healthy, just and thriving planet through education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices. Turning Green’s Conscious Kitchen is a fresh, local, organic school lunch program in West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD).
I worked on Conscious Kitchen’s team of interns to develop a pilot Curriculum for WCCUSD, aided in the district’s food procurement, researched organic vs conventional food production, and worked on multiple outreach campaigns. Through interning at Turning Green, I learned a lot about how to manage my time while on different projects. I became more confident in writing and calling companies while doing outreach for Turning Green and Conscious Kitchen. I enjoyed connecting with employees and students in WCCUSD. We received incredible feedback from the district which allowed us to change our lesson plans, food procurement, and food research. It was impactful to see Conscious Kitchen’s work shifting paradigms within organic food procurement. One of my favorite parts was finally getting to watch Conscious Kitchen present our food research to WCCUSD.
This internship was funded by the Ajmera Internship Fund.
