This summer, I worked for an environmental non-profit organization called Seaside Sustainability, Inc. located in Gloucester, MA. My various roles as an intern spoke to Seaside’s mission statement of passionately creating sustainable oceans and communities by educating through action. I was on four teams, including the Development Team, Green Scholars Team, Legislation Team, and Marine Science & Education Team. I contributed to a variety of major projects such as organizing and executing a virtual art auction as a project manager to raise funds for Seaside, designing lessons for Seaside’s “Project-Based” environmental curriculum, and developing videos of observational studies in lieu of group field trips and camps.

Working on these different teams gave me the invaluable experience of exploring a variety of areas within an environmental non-profit as well as the environmental field in general. After completing my first two years at Bowdoin, I was sure that my career and life’s work would be in the environmental field, but I was not sure in what specific area. This summer, Seaside has helped me formulate my plan going forward. I have learned that I am most passionate about development and outreach and am excited to immerse myself in classes, internships, and jobs that relate to these two areas.
