Why Does This Student's Name Say (Private)?
By Workday Project TeamAs more people begin to see and work with our recent updates around student employee hiring and management, the differences between "old" and "new" can cause confusion and sometimes concern. One of the newest, and most obvious, changes to the look of student information is that all student names in Workday or on Workday reports are now followed by "(Private)".
But why? And what does that mean for people who work with student information and with students?
When we move on to Workday Student, students will have the ability to set their directory information to "private" using Workday in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). When they do, their name will display with "(Private)" after it to make sure staff and faculty know that the student has requested that their directory information isn't shared with others. Because Banner, not Workday, is considered the system of record for student information, and because we are not yet using this Workday directory, all student information that is being imported from Banner into Workday are marked as private by default.
This means any student's information will be marked (Private) automatically by Workday because this information is not "owned" by Workday. That private flag won't be accurate, or meaningful, until we are live on Workday Student in 2025. So while it may look unnerving, for now, just disregard it.
