New England Distilling

Shakes, Smashes and Sours With Ned Wight, Owner and Distiller at New England Distilling

Get ready for the warm weather ahead with shakes, smashes, and sours. These cocktails will work with pretty much any spirit, or tart citrus (oranges are a little too sweet), and are also a great intro to mocktails.

Ingredient List:
2 oz of your choice of spirit, finer quality makes for a finer cocktail
1 oz citrus juice
*3/4 oz simple syrup
old fashioned glass
ice
shaker (mason jar and lid works great if you don't have a shaker)

Optional extras to play with:
cocktail bitters of your choice
herbs (mint, thai basil, genovese basil)
cucumber
blackberries
egg white

*You may also want to use maple syrup, which goes great with the brown spirits. Simple syrup is...simple to make. You can do this in a pot on the stove or in a mason jar in the microwave: mix equal parts water and sugar (I do 1/2 cup ea) heat until it comes to a boil, stir to dissolve sugar.

Maine Brewers' Guild

The Culture and Community of Maine Craft Beer with Sean Sullivan ’08, Executive Director of the Maine Brewers’ Guild

A lot has changed in the world of beer in Maine since 1991. Join the executive director of the Maine Brewers’ Guild, Sean Sullivan '08 for a beer tasting that tells the story of Maine's rich brewing history. Beginning with a taste of Geary's Pale Ale, first brewed in 1986 and onwards through the 90's with the start of Allagash Brewing right into the rapid growth of the IPA trend in the first two decades of the 2000's, Sean will walk you through a sampling of the beers that highlight how Maine has become one of the top destinations in the United States for craft beer tourists. So grab the drink of your choice or some of the Maine beers Sean will feature (listed below) and join a fellow Polar Bear as he shares the story of how this collaborative industry is sparking new life into Maine's economy.
