Jeffrey Knockel
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
My research is grounded in the belief that companies should be accountable for every time that they violate a user's rights (e.g., their freedom of expression, access to information, or right to privacy). I bring transparency to these violations in two research tracks. In the first track I use novel methodologies to investigate how companies misuse technology to implement politically motivated censorship at the behest of authoritarian governments. In my second track of research I reveal how companies use technology to implement surveillance at the behest of various actors, from state actors to intimate partners, and how their negligent application of technology inadvertently enables mass surveillance. Throughout all of my research, I engage directly with companies, government policymakers, journalists, and academics across multiple disciplines, to inform and protect users and remedy companies' harmful behavior.
