Martin Mbugua’s Future Plans

Dear members of the Bowdoin community,

I am writing to share that Martin Mbugua, senior vice president for communications and public affairs, will depart the College at the end of February 2026, a decision driven by a convergence of personal and family considerations. Martin will be finalizing his plans in the weeks ahead.

Martin came to Bowdoin with extensive experience in communications and public affairs in higher education, including work at institutions in the United States and internationally. That background and global perspective informed his approach to the role. Working collaboratively with colleagues across the College, Martin’s contributions include important work that strengthens our communications and public affairs efforts and advances new approaches to sharing Bowdoin’s story within our community and beyond.

Reflecting on his time at Bowdoin, Martin says, “What stood out to me from the outset and has been affirmed over time is the College’s strong sense of community and the care people bring to their work with one another. I was also struck by the collective commitment to excellence at every level and by the sense of shared ownership and responsibility that shapes daily life on campus. Though my time here has been briefer than I had anticipated, I am grateful for and honored by the opportunity to serve this outstanding institution of higher education in service of the common good.”

We will soon launch a national search for Martin’s successor. Beginning March 1, Scott Hood, senior vice president for communications and public affairs emeritus, will return to Bowdoin in an interim role to provide continuity and leadership during this transition. I am grateful for his willingness to do so.

Please join me in thanking Martin for his leadership and service to Bowdoin and in wishing him well in his next chapter.

Sincerely,
Safa
