Best Photo in the Universe

NASA selected this incredible shot by lab instructor Paul Howell, of the galaxy M51, as its Astronomy Picture of the Day back in August. The transformed photo displays the arms of the gigantic galaxy, whose winding arms are "described by a mathematical curve called a logarithmic spiral, a spiral whose separation grows in a geometric way with increasing distance from the center.
