Commencement address by senior class president Timothy Ignacio ’26

Good afternoon everyone, and aloooooha!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Timmy, and I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Class of 2026 President for the past three years.

When I first came to Bowdoin, I thought I had my life completely planned out. I was going to double major in Biochemistry and Government, survive the cold for four years, and apply straight into medical school.

And while some of that is still true, Bowdoin changed the way I understand success. The people I met here taught me that life is not just about achievement. It’s also about community, balance, creativity, and joy.

For me, that lesson came when I found dance. I joined the Cowboys sophomore year, eventually became a captain, and found a passion I never expected would become such a huge part of my life. Dance taught me that joy is not frivolous. In a world that constantly pushes us toward burnout, competition, and productivity, our joy becomes a form of resistance.

Choosing to laugh with your friends, to move freely, to celebrate one another, to rest, to make time for the things you love—those choices matter.

Through dance, I found my chosen family. I found confidence. I found a version of myself that cared less about performing perfection and more about living fully.

So today, I want to thank the Cowboys, my friends, my professors, the dining hall and café workers, and my family for helping make Bowdoin a place where I could grow into that person.

Class of 2026, I hope wherever life takes us next, we remember that success means very little if we lose ourselves along the way.

I hope we continue choosing joy. Choosing community. Choosing each other. Congratulations, Class of 2026.

We did it!
