Reed Hastings ’83 on AI Shifting Focus Back to the Humanities
By Bowdoin NewsReed Hastings '83, cofounder, former CEO, and now chairman of the board at Netflix, say he looks for AI to drive a return to the humanities.
Hastings, who was a math major at Bowdoin before earning his master’s in computer science at Stanford University, says following a period where STEM “practically took over,” that “maybe what we’ll see is a rotation back to the humanities into understanding a combination of history and literature.”
“If I had a three-year-old today, I'd be doubling down on emotional skills," added Hastings in this Fortune article, excerpting from an interview Hastings did with the podcast Possible.
Hastings's $50 million gift last year launched the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity at Bowdoin.
