Bowdoin junior Brittany Hernandez will be seeing little but the open ocean until the middle of May.

The Earth and Oceanographic Science major recently set out on a six-week, 3,000-nautical-mile voyage, under sail, from New Zealand aboard the SSV Robert Seamans, a 134-foot research vessel operated by the Sea Education Association.
She is part of a select group of twenty-two undergraduates studying and sailing abroad through SEA Semester: Oceans and Climate, a program offered by Sea Education Association, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit focusing on environmental education.
“As full, working members of the scientific team and sailing crew, the students will have unique opportunity to study diverse and dynamic marine ecosystems in a remote and rarely studied region of the southwest Pacific,” according to a statement from SEA.
