Summer Fellowships

Each March, the Controller’s Office will reach out to PIs for confirmation of students they plan to work with during the following summer. Based on the information provided, the Controller’s Office prepares award offer letters and vouchers for students who will be supported by grant funding.

PI mentors and ADCs will be copied on communication with students regarding fellowship offers and announcements. Grant funded fellowships will have the same announcement and acceptance timeline as institutional and departmental fellowships so that students can decide between multiple offers, if offered.

Summer fellows are offered a stipend to defray costs for participating in an educational research experience that ultimately benefits the student as opposed to hourly payment for performing work. The summer stipend offered to grant funded fellows will be the standard fellowship rate across departmental and institutional fellowships.

Please note, some sponsors and award terms do not allow student fellows to receive set stipend payments.  In these cases, student fellows will be offered a research assistantship rather than a fellowship, offering hourly wage for work as an employee rather than a set stipend. Note, employee wages are subject to fringe and indirect charges (please reference Payroll on Grants). These sponsors and award terms do not allow grants to cover housing subsistence costs, but housing should be provided by departmental, endowment and/or College housing subsidy support. The Controller’s Office will prepare research assistantship offer letters that will have the same announcement and acceptance timeline as institutional and departmental fellowships so that students can decide between multiple offers, if offered.
