Sophia Young ’27 Legal Intern at Pine Tree Legal Assistance
By Sophia Young ’27
This summer, I had the privilege of interning with Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine’s largest legal aid organization dedicated to providing free civil legal services to those who otherwise couldn’t afford them. As a Pine Tree intern, I helped attorneys with legal research, document drafting, communication with clients, assistance in court presentation, and overall was able to learn the ins and outs of Maine’s state court system. I was particularly interested in helping with cases regarding domestic abuse and sexual assault, divorce, eviction prevention, and veterans’ rights, helping our clients pursue the justice they deserve. I also helped launch PTLA’s first criminal record sealing clinic, a pilot program that enabled Mainers to overcome barriers to housing, employment, and civic engagement by sealing certain minor Class E misdemeanors.
Additionally, I organized and participated in outreach trips across rural Maine, raising awareness about legal rights and expanding access to PTLA’s services. My involvement in this incredibly important work has greatly inspired me to pursue civil legal aid and help communities become more informed about their legal rights. It’s been so incredibly gratifying to be involved in legal aid work that makes such a meaningful difference in people’s lives!
