Andy Robinson ’27: Curatorial Intern at Maine Maritime Museum

Maine Maritime Museum (MMM) is located in Bath and focuses primarily on the Bath and Maine's maritime heritage as a center of the shipbuilding industry. MMM connects people to the past, present, and future of Maine's waterways and their global reach.

Summer Projects:

  • Transcribed oral histories of shipyard workers, photographed items.
  • Surveyed and organized items in collection and archival storage spaces.

Events & Learning Opportunities:

  • Attended MMM leadership meetings while learning principles of exhibit design.
  • Attended "Active Collections Forum" Conference at UMaine Orono with local historians and archivists.
  • Worked as a bid assistant / greeter at annual gala.
  • Learned the process of grant applications for historic preservation organizations.
  • Researched and wrote article focusing on evolution of labor rights in Bath shipyards to be published in museum's newsletter.

Takeaways:

  • Gained understanding of museum operations, new appreciation for Maine's history and culture.
  • Learned to use PastPerfect Cataloguing system and Epson Scanners.
  • Learned to engage with fundraisers and donors
  • Enjoyed excursions to local historic sites!
