FOAA/Shellfish Task Force Staff
By Alejandro Ramos ‘25This summer I had the pleasure and honor of working with the Town of Brunswick Clerk’s office. During my time there I worked on various projects. I was primarily working on helping the Clerk’s office create a system to organize Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) requests and learning the laws and regulations surrounding the public’s right to request information from government offices.
Another big project I worked on was serving as a staff member on the Shellfish Task Force, a subcommittee of the Town’s Marine Resources Committee. My job was to research what other coastal towns were doing to protect the interests of shellfish harvesters while also conserving and protecting shellfish. I learned about research processes, negotiations, and local politics. I also learned about maritime and shellfish laws and regulations made by the Town and the Maine Department of Marine Resources. I learned how Town politics and ordinance revisions work. I was also able to meet with shellfish harvesters and the Town’s Marine Warden and other law enforcement officers to get a better sense of what they do, how it affects their jobs and the interests of each.
All these experiences this summer exposed me to various sides of the law, from a wide range of perspectives. It all cemented my love of law and choice to continue pursuing a career in the legal field. It was a very rewarding experience!
