Oasis Place Malaysia is a leading multi-disciplinary intervention center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Offering services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, educational psychology, and nutrition counseling, their mission is to "empower lives through excellence in therapy and education." By connecting the mind and body, they foster holistic well-being and support individuals in reaching their fullest potential in both children and adults alike.

Some of the major projects I helped work on include...

  • Kindness Matters: an event that takes place in mental health awareness month (October), celebrating empathy, kindness, and understanding among neurodivergent and neurotypical populations alike.
  • Social Thinking Camps (Social Buddies for children aged 5-11 and Quest Buddies for children aged 12-18) to help improve a child’s social awareness and behavioral flexibility. This also includes helping a child to identify emotions and practice emotional regulation strategies to use in different social situations, as well as improve their executive functioning skills.
  • KLK (Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad) x Oasis Place: an educational program that caters to local schools withneurodivergent kids. This program offers both parents and teachers resources and strategies to enrich the child’s learning environment at home and in school.
  • Oasis Place Turns 10 (to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Oasis Place): planning and organizing monthly events such as livestreams with different departments and topics to answer questions, and Open Days with universities in and outside of Malaysia.
  • Best Buddies Malaysia: a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities specifically for one-to-one friendships(between neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals). This also includes creating events to foster stronger friendships, such as Virtual Bestie Bash to celebrate International Friendship Day.
During my internship at Oasis Place, I discovered my passion for working with children, which has guided my interest in psychology and the type of people I want to work with in the future. Engaging with children allowed me to learn from them, as they bring new generational perspectives, lingo, and trends. I also honed my graphic design skills, particularly with Canva, which proved invaluable for editing, designing videos, and creating social media posts. Encountering difficult situations at Oasis Place, I effectively communicated with other interns and supervisors to find solutions, demonstrating my ability to thrive in close-knit office communities. I adapted well to new working environments, managed stressful situations, and set boundaries when necessary. Additionally, I enhanced my customer service skills by working at the front desk and learned how to score psychological assessments.

My favorite parts about interning at Oasis Place include baking cookies with neurodivergent individuals! This includes shopping for ingredients, baking the cookies themselves, and cleaning up to improve their executive functioning skills. I have also thoroughly enjoyed becoming friends and meeting other interns to learn more about what psychology is like in local universities back home.

Internship funded by the Ajmera Intership Fund.
