MidCoast Hospital is a not-for-profit health system focused on comprehensive care through education, clinical support, and collaboration with community partners. The Community Health and Wellness Department is dedicated to helping individuals manage their health conditions and enhance their well-being through classes, screenings, and targeted outreach.

A significant portion of my internship was spent supporting the local tobacco cessation program by conducting personalized interviews with patients to help develop individualized treatment plans tailored to their needs, focusing on effective communication and sustainable changes. I also worked in the Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program by assisting with patient assessments, recorded vitals, and worked closely with clinical staff to monitor progress for those managing cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. I also had the opportunity to shadow physicians across specialties such as neurology, cardiology, maternity, and women’s health allowing me to better understand a physician's role in patient care.

These experiences taught me how to connect with patients in meaningful ways while navigating complex health challenges. This internship reinforced my goals of a career in medicine and the importance of patient-centered approaches, where empathy and clear communication are essential in empowering individuals to take control of their health and achieve lasting results.

Internship funded by the Peter Buck Internship Fund.
