Improving Healthcare Services for Underserved and Underinsured Residents
By Gisela Contreras ‘27This summer, I worked with the Senior Program Officer on community listening initiatives throughout my county, asking residents, "What impacts your health the most?" based on the eight social drivers of health. We were able to reach over 400 community residents.
The Healthcare Foundation of Northern Lake County supports nonprofits that enhance healthcare services for underserved, uninsured, and underinsured residents. My major projects included reviewing grant applications for various local nonprofit organizations and compiling and analyzing the community listening data.
I rediscovered my passion for engaging with the community and helping underserved populations, which reignited my desire to become a doctor. I attended an SBIRT training and was awarded a continuing education certificate. My favorite part was managing community listening tables at a local university’s free mobile health clinic for uninsured patients.
