Providing Healthcare Services to Cherokee People
By Keysha Cain-Garr ‘25Over the summer, I had the amazing opportunity to work at Wilma P. Mankiller Health Center. Wilma P. Mankiller Health Center provides healthcare services at no cost to Cherokee people.
During my my time at Wilma P., I spent a week shadowing multiple different departments including dental, pharmacy, lab, primary care, diabetic care, dietician, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. While spending time with each of these departments, I was able to learn more about how a typical workday flows for each department and gain a bit of hands-on experience. This allows me to truly consider what I want my future occupation to be.
My favorite part of my experience at Wilma P. is the progress and relief I was able to see as patients continued coming back. The joy I felt while working at Wilma P. leads me to believe that healthcare is the correct route for me to follow.
