Working on Education Policy
By Brian Lam ‘24At VIC Learning Center, I created and executed the Center’s START-SMART program which saw registration rates exceeding our expectations by nearly 200%. In this role, I analyzed student performance metrics, created and implemented standardized science curriculum for grades 5-8, and streamlined end-to-end client and student onboarding experiences. This work was used to implement a 5-year expansion plan that will offer new educational services to serve under-resourced communities.
Prior to this position, I worked as an intern for the Center for two years, managing teams of newer interns in delivering quality, standardized instruction while developing culturally appropriate and human-centered approaches to learning. The shift from institutionalized cut-and-tie learning methods of test prep academies to personalized curriculum saw an increase in performance, and my work on adolescent identity formation will culminate into an independent study course at Bowdoin and a career in curriculum development after.
Working as an assistant manager at VIC Learning Center reaffirmed my decision to pursue future work in education policy and childcare development, as my favorite part of this role was the opportunity to craft “solutions” that allowed me to take on the role of the student, teacher, organization director, and policymaker- all in one case!
