Spending the Summer in the Newsroom
By Vaughn Vial ‘25The Portland Press Herald is Maine’s largest local newspaper. It’s thousands of Mainers’ primary source for learning about local politics, environmental issues, sports, arts, and more. Over the summer, the Herald was bought by the National Trust for Local News—a big win for independent journalism that was exciting to witness firsthand.
I wrote for the features section, focusing on art, entertainment, and food. I loved the autonomy that the Herald gave me as an intern, and I got more bylines than I expected going in. Some of my favorite articles that I wrote include a story about how the heavy June rains affected local business and a story about a new immersive art exhibit opening in South Portland.
I got priceless experience interviewing sources, spending time in the newsroom, and, most importantly, writing. I’m grateful to have been able to discover my passion for journalism and the value of local reporting.
